Help Save Our Lady of Loreto Church !

The Italians that settled in East New York were very religious. The local Catholic Church there was Our Lady of the Presentation. However, the Italians who attended service there did not feel welcome by the Irish and German parishioners. A mission church, Our Lady of Loreto was started for the Italian speaking Catholics, in an old building on Powell Street. This building was previously occupied by the Salvation Army. It was a very small building and could not accommodate the growing Italian population. A site for a new, larger church was donated by the Molinari family on Sackman and Pacific streets. This was a chance for the Italian community to build a church to fit their needs. It was an extremely difficult project to undertake as the would be parishioners were for the most part, poor. Most of them hardly had enough money to support themselves and their families let alone enough money to donate to erect a church. There was a guiding Spirit leading the way however, because even through many obstacles, Our Lady of Loreto was built.

All the physical work to build the church was donated by the Italian immigrants in the neighborhood. All the hard work and sacrifice paid off in the end . Our Lady of Loreto is a beautiful church that generations of Italians Americans and other ethnic groups over the years have called home.

It is a monument to the perseverance and spirit of the Italian immigrants who settled here as well as a lasting reminder of all the struggles, sacrifices and triumphs of immigrants in this country.

Now, the Catholic Church wants to demolish this beautiful church because it is no longer useful to them.

115 years ago, a generation of Italian immigrants fought to build Our Lady of Loreto church, today, a new generation must fight to save it.
